Reported on American Indian charter schools in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula for a Carnegie and Knight foundations-funded news initiative. Built an interactive timeline that tells the story of American Indian Education in the United States, including video commentary from Michigan tribal historians. Produced a short documentary about three teenagers’ experiences growing up on a reservation and attending their local charter school. Created a short audio slideshow about daily life on the reservation. Wrote text to acompany multimedia stories. Also, co-wrote a story on a tribal college that has turned into Michigans second largest charter school authorizer. Staff Writer, Novato Advance (small circulation weekly) Novato, Calif.                                                   2005-2008
Covered crime, education and arts and entertainment news for a community of 60,000 people. Special projects included following the year-long struggle of a Novato charter school and its untimely demise that same year; contributing to an award winning investigative series on teen drinking and I wrote another in-depth story about Novato’s growing immigrant community. Copy editing. Designed the news pages. Acted as Managing Editor during Managing Editor’s absence.
